Multan Hazrat Bahauddin Zakaria (may Allah have mercy on him) was a prominent Sufi sage. He was born around 1170 AD in Kot Kahrur, a town near Multan. For fifteen years, Hazrat Zakaria traveled to different cities of South Punjab, He became an outspoken critic of the then ruler of Multan, Nasir al-Din Qabacha, and when he overthrew Qabacha in 1228 (RA), he sided with the Mamluk Sultan Al-Tamish of Delhi. Zakariya s support was crucial to Al-Tamish s victory and therefore Al-Tamish bestowed upon him the title of Shaykh al-Islam to oversee the spiritual affairs of the state in gratitude for his support. He also enjoyed official patronage from the Sultan. During his lifetime, Zakaria befriended Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar (RA), a widely respected Sufi saint of Sindh and the founder of the Qalandriya order. Hazrat Bahauddin Zakaria (RA), Shahbaz Qalandar (RA), Baba Fariduddin Ganj Shakar (RA) and Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari (RA) became part of the legendary Haq Char Yar, or Four Friends group, which is very .
