This oral history is a group conversation with Alice McDonald, Jay Alexander, Richard Craft, and Michelle Slaughter about The Dry. The Dry was a Black homesteading community the developed in Otero County, Colo. around 1916. Alice is the last, local resident of The Dry. She talks about the origins of the community, her family s involvement with the settlement, and life in general on The Dry. Her son, Richard, and her niece Jay talk about growing up on The Dry during the summer. They talk about leisure activities and making crafts. Their opinion on The Dry is much more pleasant and relaxing than Alice s depictions. During the oral history we were joined by Michelle Slaughter. Michelle is an archeologist who helped to unearth much of what we know about the physical location of The Dry with her team in 2013.
