Playing high notes on the trumpet can be a challenge for many musicians. A key aspect that influences this ability is the mouthpiece you use. Well, a flat mouthpiece allows for faster airflow to move through the mouthpiece more easily. This supports the vibrations of your lips and makes it easier to produce the higher partials (overtones) required for high notes. In contrast, a deep mouthpiece tends to have a larger bore and deeper cup, which can result in slower airflow. This can make playing high notes more difficult as there is less support for the lips and it becomes more difficult to maintain the tension needed to produce the higher harmonics. However, it is important to emphasize that the choice of mouthpiece is very personal and depends on many factors, including your individual anatomical features, playing style and preferences.
