Franz Reichelt was an inquisitive inventor eager to make a name for himself. A tailor by trade, he was working on a design for a wearable parachute that would save early aviator s lives if he could get it to work. While he tested early on with dummies, on his final test he chose to jump himself from the lowest platform of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Reichelt had become fixated on developing a suit for aviators that would convert into a parachute and allow them to survive a fall should they be forced to leave their aircraft in mid-air. Initial experiments conducted with dummies dropped from the fifth floor of his apartment building had been successful, but he was unable to replicate those early successes with any of his subsequent designs.
