A Utah detective is talking about how a child s escape ultimately led to the conviction of Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt in an abuse case. “It’s definitely a case that pulls at your heartstrings a little bit,” said Det. Jessica Bate with the Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department. Detective Bate spoke to 2News’ Brian Schnee on Monday about the case that garnered worldwide attention and resulted in Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt convicted on felony child abuse charges. “Actually, seeing it in person, I don’t think anything could have prepared you for that,” said Bate, who has been with the department for six years. “I don’t think it really sank in the state of their condition until I received the reports from the medical personnel which essentially indicated that if these children were given back to their caretakers or guardians at the time, they wouldn’t have survived much longer.” Bate first met R, one of Ruby Franke’s children who escaped Hildebrandt’s home, while R was already at the hospital.
