Lok Sabha Election 2024 Location: Ranaghat Lok Sabha Constituency, Nadia, West Bengal Nadia district in Bengal has a huge settlement of Matuas and others who have had migrated from Bangladesh several decades back. NTT has been relentlessly pursuing the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) after the rules were commissioned on March 11, 2024, four years after the bill was passed in Parliament in 2019. In Bengal, the CAA essentially matters to the people from Matua community, the Namasudras and other marginalised Hindus who had migrated from Bangladesh, mostly under the trying times. They were mostly undocumented people who over the years have managed to procure Indian credentials but have nothing to prove their connection with Bangladesh. The CAA rules demand some legitimate proof to confirm their link with Bangladesh. People are thus nonchalant to apply for citizenship afresh. Angry people say that they would apply for CAA once all the leaders have applied for the same.
