A deepwater port on a remote island off the northern Australian coast has been identified as an important asset for bolstering Australia’s defence capabilities. Port Melville is now being used to refuel naval vessels following the Defence Strategic Review. “What is really clear is that when we look at where our national security lies, it lies well beyond our borders, and we need to have the capacity to project,” Defence Minister Richard Marles said.
