Kaijuu Monogatari wants to be different. Breaking from the mold established by Dragon Quest three years earlier, Namco publishes a JRPG that strips away the traditional progression system perhaps influenced by the likes of Ultima? it sets you free. You re free! Totally free! The hero starts here and... go fight the final boss. Oh, you don t want to start the game with the hero? No worries, you can use the pass command to switch to another character elsewhere on the map and play with them instead! There are four of them. Obviously, you ll want (and need) them to eventually join forces. But that s it. There are a few mandatory items you need to get before you can access the final boss s castle, but otherwise the only thing standing in your way is your own strength. And this leads to the game s main problem. The grind. If many RPGs of the era require you to grind quite a bit, Kaijuu Monogatari is almost nothing but that. First, at the beginning, you need to grind four times. Once for each character. Four different beginnings. Then, once you finally get your characters together, you have to grind for money. For experience. You need to grind to be strong enough to get certain items. And then you need to grind to be able to survive the final dungeon. If most RPGs have some kind of natural progression path, where going through the game s story slowly makes you stronger and stronger, the free nature of Kaijuu Monogatari means the only thing you need to do (almost) is to grind until you beat the game. Granted, there is an entire world map to explore. Secrets to discover. And this exploring could lead to the slow leveling up required. But it s easy to stumble into areas where you re too weak. It s easy to get wiped out by random enemies. It s easy to get lost because there s just no telling what you need to do next. The concept of the game is good; the execution, not so much.
